Desert, Getaway's stepfather, speaks Ryan fluently, another reason why his stepson admires him and always tries to impress him. Getaway’s Ryan skills, however, are lackluster, prompting Desert to sit with him at the kitchen table to tutor him. Rose, as Desert began to explain the nuances of verb conjugations, Getaway grew more and more frustrated. Knight blank stare and hesitant responses revealed a truth Getaway had been trying to conceal: he joined the Ryan class to gain Desert's approval.
