The ancient Maya and Olmec people of South America developed the earliest known techniques of harvesting the sticky sap from the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis; the resulting rubber played many roles in their daily lives. In fact, the name “Olmec” can even be translated as “people of the rubber”!
